Automatic Exchange Betting
by Colin Magee

The past decade has seen a technological revolution in facilities for betting on horseracing and other sports. From the proliferation of online information to the advent of betting exchanges, it is now possible to analyse form and betting odds; run selection systems; place bets and track results electronically.

Today, the leading betting exchange, Betfair, matches 15 times as many daily transactions as the London Stock Exchange.

Crucially, the availability of programmatic access to exchange markets via an application programming interface (API), enables the final piece in reliable automation of the entire betting process.

Automatic Exchange Betting examines each stage of the betting process and shows how it can be automated, with numerous examples applied to horseracing, all implemented using the Betfair API.

Betting strategies, best practice and pitfalls are presented which illustrate the concepts of betting automation, together with practical, re-useable code examples written in open source software to work with Betfair's Free Access API.

The book shows how automating betting strategies not only saves time, but introduces an entirely new paradigm for betting.

A combination of speed of execution, consistency and scalability means hitherto impossible betting strategies become feasible, and methodical approaches to betting can be implemented without manual intervention.

"A comprehensive guide to using the Betfair API in order to create and implement automatic betting strategies"

Tom Johnson, Head of API Product Development, Betfair

Betting Insiders Report - Review of Automated Exchange Betting
At first glance the chances are that the majority of people will balk and run at this book given its size 350+ pages, and ‘technical speak’, but the consensus is that although not for the faint hearted it is both worth the money and the investment of any serious bettor's time.

To quote from the book ‘A combination of speed of execution, consistency and scalability means hitherto impossible betting strategies become feasible, and methodical approaches to betting can be implemented without manual intervention’. API’s (Application Programming Interfaces) are often referred to but how many of us know really what they are? What is involved?

The book is split into three parts, Exploring Requirements For Betting Automation, Implementing A Framework For Betting Automation and Automated Strategies In Progress. It aims to give us the information we need to write our own Betting Exchange software with clear and step by step instruction. Like all good things patience is an important factor and this book is set out in such a way that you will be led to progress through each ‘Part’. Unless you are already familiar with the concepts and jargon this is important. Having followed the book through you should be armed with information which will enable you to set up your own basic betting program, and allow you to apply your own betting strategies and test them out on an automated basis.

The book also demonstrates how to set up more complex programs using your own databases, together with scheduling bets and helping the bettor to automate their betting activity.

Realistically you are looking to be using Betfair as all references and codes within the book refer to Betfair only and would require ‘manipulation’ to be used for other Betting Exchanges. This said I would assume that many, if not most bettors still use Betfair as their primary Bettign Exchange. Whether the book actually gives you the mechanics to the point of a lay person being able to create their own API’s is questionable as you are required to learn a computer language, PERL and install particular pieces of complex software to your PC, Linux and MySQL. I wouldn’t say that this book is for a wide audience, but for those seriously interested in ‘investing’ their time to make their profitable betting strategies more efficient, this may just give them the key. If exploring the possibility of automating your betting activities interests you then you could do worse than to buy this book.
